ABSTRACT

Introduction: In the academic world, scientific publication has become a constant problem, both in its quantitative and qualitative elements. Objective: To characterize MEDISAN's publication rate according to some aspects of its scientific and editorial production. Methods: An observational, descriptive and transversal research, of bibliometric type, was carried out on the scientific production of MEDISAN journal from Santiago de Cuba during the five-year period 2017-2021. The study population was made up of all scientific articles published in that period according to the records of SciELO Citation Index and Google Scholar databases, as well as those of the journal itself on the Open Journal Systems. Results: During the analyzed period, 38 issues were published, which included 679 articles and 2,367 authors. The year 2017 stood out with the highest number of publications (31.8%) and the year 2019 with a lower number (14.3%). Cuban authors had the greatest contribution (629 articles), especially those from Santiago de Cuba province, where professionals from University of Medical Sciences stood out, with 50.1% of all production. The h5 index revealed a trend of increasing citations received by the journal, since in 2021 it was 23 and in 2022 it increased to 27. Conclusions: The analysis of scientific and editorial production revealed the strengths and weaknesses of the journal, which makes it possible to draw up policies to increase its quality and, with it, its visibility in databases.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The challenges posed in recent years at the health level as a result of the virus that caused the Covid-19, demanded a greater presence of the entire scientific community worldwide and Panama did not escape that reality, from the Panamanian Society of Pediatrics (SPP) we are pleased for all the work and contribution made to the country in recent years. Since we assumed the presidency of the SPP in the year 2021, we have focused on continuous training and strengthening the capacities of our associates through a series of courses, teaching days, seminars and workshops, not only in person, but also virtually. For example, we achieved a wide participation in the virtual courses we offered, which were focused on pediatric vaccination, we also offered a seminar-workshop related to Childhood Obesity and we accompanied the Social Security Fund in the neonatal resuscitation course, among others. However, our most important event is undoubtedly our annual pediatric congress, which brings together a wide range of national and international specialists in pediatrics with the main objective of updating knowledge, improving skills, analyzing current challenges, learning new methods of diagnosis and care, as well as considering the future of pediatric care. During the last two years each congress has been received with great success by the more than 500 participants that have attended each one and we have no doubt that they have fulfilled the expectations of the attendees. On the other hand, we have strived to be a Pediatric Society that is directly involved in the national activity, trying, as our main objective establishes, to be a full defender of the rights of children and adolescents in the country. We have been an advisory body for the authorities, proposing concrete solutions related to the need to strengthen the primary care network, promote good nutrition and healthy lifestyles, among others, which have contributed to decision-making in favor of the child population. In fact, we restructured our website and have used the various digital platforms available to us to make a strong statement on a variety of issues that directly affect the population we serve. Thus, for example, we have urged the authorities to take actions that really protect children from being victims of child abuse in all its forms (physical, sexual, verbal, etc.), we have exposed the need to promote programs to prevent teenage pregnancies and at the same time to make a greater effort to educate on the subject so that the corresponding complaints can be made and the rights of the victims can be restored. To recover vaccination coverage and orient parents regarding the benefits of completing their children's vaccination schedules has also been another of the campaigns in which we have invested our efforts. As a Society we have worked in parallel in the unification of our associates, the opening for more colleagues to join our guild. We currently have 320 active members; however, we will not rest until we get every pediatrician in our country to join our association and together we can guarantee the best care for our patients. We still have many challenges ahead of us, for example, we have to work on the development and harmonization of protocols for the management of different medical conditions to ensure that diagnoses are as accurate as possible and treatments are implemented in a timely manner. Another aspect that we would like to improve is to have the technical means at our disposal to make the process of affiliation, admission or update to the Pediatric Society more agile, simple and comfortable. We are fully aware that, without investing in improving the skills and abilities of our members, we would not be a true association dedicated to providing you with the best. As such, we will continue to encourage learning and skill enhancement to meet the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has left us with. Finally, we hope to continue building bridges and working with diverse societies, organizations, universities, companies and governments to achieve our goal of closing the inequality gap in the comprehensive care of children throughout the country, and for this we will insist on participation through every space, ceasing to be spectators and thus accompanying the integral development of each infant.

ABSTRACT

The Peruvian Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics (RPGO, for its acronym in Spanish) has obtained its inclusion in the important Scopus database. A quick review of the journal's publication recalls the editorial dedication of its six editors, four of whom had just recently chaired the Peruvian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SPOG, for its acronym in Spanish). The initial editorial work was carried out manually, on typewriters and continuously visiting the printing press, as well as the sponsors. The commitment of the SPOG Steering Committees to finance the publication and distribution of the issues allowed the gradual indexing to local, regional and international databases. Its internalization was expanded since the publication of the RPGO in the Open Journal Systems (OJS), a computer system where articles are published with punctuality, quality, including their editorial characteristics and the Information for Authors. Now the publication is only virtual, in English and Spanish, with visibility and impact of the articles since the beginning of the RPGO in 1955. With updated OJS data on the RPGO, the number of monthly visits to the abstracts reaches up to 10 thousand and monthly downloads of articles in PDF format reach more than 9 thousand. And, in the field of obstetrics and gynecology scientific journals in Latin America and Spain in Scopus, the h index of the RPGO by Google Scholar Metrics stands out as one of the best. At present, and facing future challenges, the activity of the RPGO has been strengthened, establishing an editorial team and tools that allow the already initiated professionalization of the processes of the editorial activity.

ABSTRACT

Due to the high incidence and the earlier onset age, high myopia has become an important public health problem in China. Posterior scleral reinforcement surgery has been developed for over 60 years in order to control the rapid progression and complications of high myopia. By suturing a certain size of material on the surface of the posterior eyeball, thickness and elasticity modulus of the local sclera significantly increase. As the result, the rapid growth of the axial length and the chorioretinopathy could be alleviated. At present, controversies about its clinical efficacy and safety still exist, so posterior scleral reinforcement surgery has not been widely carried out all over the world. An in-depth analysis of the mechanism, surgical manipulations and materials, the clinical application status of posterior scleral reinforcement surgery on control of high myopia can provide a basis for further standardized application of this surgery

ABSTRACT

High myopia has become a global public health issue, posing a significant threat to visual health. There are still some problems in the process of diagnosis and treatment, including the definition of high myopia and pathological myopia, opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence in the diagnosis and treatment system, domestic and international collaboration in the field of high myopia, the application of genetic screening in children with myopia and high myopia patients, and the exploration of new treatment methods for high myopia. Nowadays, myopia and high myopia show the characteristics of early onset age and sharp rise in prevalence, and gradually become the main cause of low vision and irreversible blindness in young and middle-aged people. Therefore, it is of great significance to accurately define high myopia and pathological myopia, combine artificial intelligence and other methods for screening and prevention, promote cooperation in different fields, strengthen gene screening for early-onset myopia and adopt new and effective ways to treat it.

ABSTRACT

Inherited retinal diseases (IRD) are a group of genetic disorders with high genetic and clinical heterogeneity. Genetic diagnosis has become one essential method for patients with IRD in their clinical management. So far, about 30% of the patients with IRD cannot get molecular diagnosis (no pathogenic variant detected or only mono-allele variant identified in AR genes) using target or whole exome sequencing. Most missing heritability or variants for these patients were variants located in no-coding regions (deep intron or promoter regions) and structure variants of the known IRD genes. It is more challenge to reveal this kind of missing variants, which need using whole genome sequencing combined with other cellular or molecular assays.

ABSTRACT

Ocular fundus diseases is a kind of ophthalmic diseases that occur in the vitreous, retina, choroid and optic nerve, including a series of pathophysiological changes such as inflammation, exudation and proliferation. Because of high morbidity and high blindness rate, ocular fundus diseases has been paid more and more attention from medical community. With the continuous deepening of research on its etiology, anatomy and pathological mechanism in recent years, clinicians have obtained more abundant treatment methods than in the past, and the medical treatment of ocular fundus diseases have made many phased progress. However, due to its wide spectrum of diseases and complex pathological mechanism, clinicians still need to further explore more effective treatment methods, and improve the effect of diagnosis and treatment to ocular fundus diseases.

ABSTRACT

With high morbidity, branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) is a common retinal vascular disease in the clinic. Although the classic characteristics of BRVO have been recognized for a long time, the traditional understanding of BRVO has been challenged along with development and application of new imaging technologies, including the reasonable classification and staging of the disease, and the vascular characteristics at the occlusive site via multimodal imaging, etc. Thus, re-summarizing and refining these features as well as further improving and optimizing traditional imaging evaluation, can not only deepen the correct acknowledge of the entity, but also find biomarkers of prognosis of visual function, which is helpful to establish better diagnosis and treatment strategy. In the meanwhile, it is necessary that clinical characteristics of BRVO on imaging and the reliability of these imaging techniques are worth correct understanding and objective assessment.

ABSTRACT

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a common macular disease, mainly manifested as a plasma detachment of the macula. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective treatment for CSC, but with the shortage of the photosensitizer Verteporfin, the effective treatment of CSC has become a common concern for ophthalmologists. In this paper, based on the latest research results on the relationship between the changes in the thickness of the outer nuclear layer and the natural course of the disease and PDT therapy, we propose that patients with CSC should receive effective treatment as early as possible to prevent irreversible damage to visual function due to the thinning of the outer nuclear layer. In addition to PDT, it is recommended that laser photocoagulation or subthreshold micropulse laser treatment of the leaking spot should be considered first, depending on the presence of the leaking spot and its location in relation to the macula center. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy can be considered if there is a combination of choroidal neovascularization and/or polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. ABSTRACT

The data related signs of ocular fundus associated with COVID-19 published in this journal collected from December 2022, while the pandemic of COVID-19 was in a clustering occurrence. The signs of ocular fundus including acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN), cotton wool spots or Purtscher-like retinopathy, central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and macular edema of unknown etiology. The different lesions can be concurrent existence in some cases is one of the clinical characteristics of COVID-19, other characteristics including both eye involved, predominated affected more women, aged from 13 to 56 years. AMN was mentioned recently in most papers on COVID-19, it has been known as deep capillary ischemia. Cotton wool spots is sign infarct in superficial capillary. Retina dots indicated retinal infarct in the outer plexiform layer. CRVO was demonstrated that the blood clot blocks the flow of blood at the level of the lamina cribro, optic disc edema with macular subretinal fluid showed the retina tissue as well as optic head affected. Eye is part of the body, lesions of ocular fundus are identical with body system. Several study proposed different hypothesis for these alterations in acute phase of COVID-19: direct viral endothelial injury, activation of the immune response by a cytokine storm leading to a procoagulant state or transient hypercoagulability. Retina lesions demonstrated a vasculature impairment in several layers of retina and edema in retina and optic disk. We should monitor in the acute phase of COVID-19 the prothrombotic markers and the treatment should consider anti-virus and preventing thrombosis formation.
